Professional Experience

 

 University of California, Irvine,  2003-2008

  • Senior Editor/Writer and Program Manager for the Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Edited and wrote articles on department activities for distribution to the campus and the general audience, including the media. Lead role creating and ensuring quality control on many of the school’s publications, from brochures to speeches to position papers.
  • Editor of the UCIArtsQuarterly newsletter. Responsible for editing, writing and assigning stories, composing headlines, image selection and collaborating with designers on the newsletter’s dynamic look.
  • Lead role maintaining UCI’s online presence by editing, writing and updating content for its website.
  • Involved with many of the school’s outreach programs and special projects.  Most significantly, had lead role on media efforts related to the Arts Plaza project (designed by Maya Lin) and the innovative Beall Center for Art and Technology.
  • Regularly contributed to UCImagazine, the campus’ primary journal.

 Los Angeles Times, 1990-2003

  • Feature writer, columnist and reviewer for various general-interest and feature sections (primarily the Orange County Edition).
  • Originated and wrote “O.C. Film” and “Alternate Screen,” weekly columns on classic and foreign films for the Weekend entertainment magazine and Calendar section for five years.
  • Originated and wrote “Word & Web,” a monthly column on books and websites for the Home Design section for three years.
  • Co-wrote “Kids on Film,” a weekly column on movies from a family perspective for Weekend for three years. Co-wrote a monthly recreation column for the Living section for two years.

 BodyPRIDE,  1997

  • Co-wrote this full-length book (Griffin Publishing, in national release) on teen fitness and self-esteem. Also co-edited “Lean for Life (Griffin Publishing, 1996, in national release).

 

 Other

  • Los Angeles County Bureau Chief  (San Gabriel Valley Tribune) responsible for coordinating coverage (including assigning and editing stories) and specializing in government (Los Angeles City Council, county Board of Supervisors) reporting.
  • Freelance writer/editor for new media and traditional media, including various websites, blogs, general interest magazines, newspapers and literary journals. Was also a contract consultant for Collegiate Newspaper Advisory Services, formerly a New York group providing critiques for college newspapers.

          Received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.

Honors

  •  Journalism: Several regional and local awards (list provided on request) and was nominated for Pulitzer Prize consideration for a series of stories and follow-ups on living conditions at Los Angeles County’s MacLaren Children’s Center.
  • Art and Digital Graphics: Honored internationally for digital art and one of the artists spotlighted in “Photoshop and Illustrator Synergy: Studio Secrets” (published by IDG Books Worldwide, 1998). Images have appeared in several internet magazines and galleries
